Curse of the Crimson Throne
Where to start. I have been in this city for close to ten years now and I still have not found my place in life. I have searched for my origins for a long time but I am none the wiser then I was when I started. So ever since I regained my freedom I have wandered this city alone, my friends left right after being freed and I have seen little of them ever since. I have made one new friend though, a duelist from one of the dueling schools here in the city. She has offered me to stay with her but I have refused. My place is in the streets, among the people I want to help.
Now 10 years after I have arrived here, the city is in turmoil, and I wonder what I can do about it. It started when I received a letter from a woman who claimed to have information about my former captor and his whereabouts, so I went to the meeting place, a little surprised to find my old friends there as well as my new one. We listened to the woman, who told us where to find the man and his alligator, in return for our promise to return her harrow deck to us. Before we left she laid out cards for us, telling us about our past, present and future.
So we set out for the man’s hideout and found an old building at the shore of the river. We decided for a straightforward approach and simply knocked on the door, killing the guard who opened the door. Inside we found a bunch of children in rags, much like we used to be. We investigated further and went down to where the man was hiding. The waters however proved treacherous, with a large shark swimming around. But the dolphins I summoned made quick work of the beast. The next room we found our target and the fight didn’t last very long. Further inspection of the building got us the harrow deck and a prisoner. So we decided to first bring the children to one of the temples, then deliver the prisoner to the guards and as last deliver the harrow deck to the woman, who we found out should be dead for weeks now. So before I was going to give her the deck I wanted to ask her some questions. I do not like to be fooled.
While walking through the city we quickly noticed something was wrong, and soon it became apparent that we had stumbled in the middle of a riot. A few interesting things happened here though. First of all the prisoner escaped. I don’t know how this happened as I wasn’t the one watching him, but he got away. Second, some doomsday prophet apparently recognized me for someone else and was babbling something about me having returned to save them all. Maybe this is worth looking into.
We got the children to the temple safely and then went to see the woman. She explained that she was a ghost and that the only way she could communicate with us was through this trickery. I have a hard time believing this, but returned the harrow deck none the less.
The next days there was more rioting in the city. Apparently someone is causing trouble by accusing the queen of having killed her husband and taking control of the power. So I went to the palace to see the queen, whom I’ve actually met quite a while ago, before she became queen. I still have a brooch she dropped in the streets so many years ago. Having found a second one I had a convenient excuse to go talk to her. I handed her back the second brooch and talked to her about what was happening in the city. After the talk I am more then inclined to be on her side and agreed to help the city by working for the guards.
I found the other and we went to the citadel to receive orders. We were told to investigate one of the former guards who was suspected of inciting riots. He was to be captured alive preferably, but this turned out quite differently as my swordmaster friend cut him in two, literally. We did find proof that he was behind the riots, although he was not the one who thought of the way to do it, some mystery woman is behind it all. So we took his remains and the proof back to the citadel and explained what had happened.
I must say that the past 10 years have changed my two old friends quite a bit. The cleric has certainly found a way in his faith and seems eager to protect life, even that of his enemies, preferring to capture them alive rather then just killing them. A very admirable way of life I must say. My other friend however I am not so sure about. He seems to be a bit too eager to use his faith in Calistria as an excuse to kill or hurt people. He will have to be watched carefully.
